Kuliso removes the language wall for ESL and ELL students.
It doesn't do the thinking.

ESL and ELL teachers ask: "Will the AI just give my students the answers?" No. That's a design decision, not an accident. The struggle is the learning — language just shouldn't be what's in the way for English language learners.

SoBot never gives the answer

SoBot uses the Socratic method — guiding questions, not giveaways. "What do you notice? What would happen if...?" Students arrive at the answer themselves. That's how it sticks.

📉

Scaffolds fade as proficiency grows

At WIDA Levels 1–2, SoBot provides full sentence frames. By Level 5–6, it steps back. Students don't need less challenge — they need less language interference.

💪

Your students still do the hard work

Productive struggle is how learning happens. Kuliso is built so students feel the real friction of problem-solving — in the language where they can actually think it through.

🎓

"Kuliso doesn't do the thinking for your students. It translates the problem so they can think."

The language wall is what we remove. The struggle — that stays. That's the learning.

📊 The Research Behind Kuliso

What happens when language
isn't a barrier

Decades of research show that ELL students with native-language academic support outperform peers who receive English-only instruction — across every measure that matters to administrators.

English Proficiency
ELD Reclassification Rate by Year
Students with bilingual scaffolding reach English proficiency faster — reclassification rates 40–60% higher by Year 3.
Based on projections from Rolstad et al. (2005) meta-analysis; Genesee et al. (2006) bilingual education review. Projections represent potential outcomes, not guarantees. Individual results vary by school context.
Academic Achievement
Reading Score Growth Over 4 Years
With native-language support, ELLs close the achievement gap by Grade 4 — often surpassing English-only peers in reading comprehension.
Based on projections from Slavin & Cheung (2005) review; Thomas & Collier (2002) longitudinal study. Projections represent potential outcomes, not guarantees.
Time to Proficiency
Years to Reach Academic English Proficiency
Counterintuitively, students who learn academic content in their native language acquire full English proficiency faster — because concepts transfer.
Based on projections from Cummins (2000) interdependence hypothesis; Thomas & Collier (1997) landmark study. Projections represent potential outcomes, not guarantees.
Engagement & Retention
Student Engagement Metrics
Language-responsive tutoring drives measurable engagement gains — attendance, participation, and assignment completion all improve.
Based on projections from Collier & Thomas (2009) meta-analysis; Suárez-Orozco et al. (2010) longitudinal engagement study. Projections represent potential outcomes, not guarantees.
🔬
About these projections: Charts show projected outcome ranges based on published peer-reviewed research on bilingual and native-language academic support programs. Sample sizes across studies range from 700–400,000 students. Individual school outcomes depend on implementation fidelity, student demographics, and program duration.

Adaptive Test Prep

Aligned with Virginia SOL, NWEA MAP,
and CAT-format assessments

Kuliso's adaptive skill assessments mirror the Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) format used by major state and benchmark tests. Students aren't just learning content — they're training in the exact adaptive format they'll face on test day.

📐

Virginia SOL — Grades 3–8 Math & Reading

✓ Adaptive (CAT)

Virginia SOL assessments for grades 3–8 math and reading are computer adaptive. Kuliso's engine adjusts difficulty in real time — the same mechanic students will encounter on test day.

Note: Other Virginia SOLs (different grades and subjects) use fixed-form delivery, not CAT.

📈

NWEA MAP Growth

✓ Adaptive (CAT)

NWEA MAP Growth is a fully adaptive benchmark assessment used nationwide. Students who practice on Kuliso experience the same question-adjustment mechanic before MAP testing day.

Used by thousands of districts for universal screening and progress monitoring.

🌐

In the Language They Think In

20+ Home Languages

Kuliso's adaptive engine runs in the student's native language first. Comprehension comes before English testing. The AI bridges home language to academic English — one concept at a time.

Spanish, Arabic, Vietnamese, Somali, Amharic, Pashto, and 15+ more.

One tool. Three jobs.

AI Tutor + Adaptive Test Prep + Language Bridge. Kuliso replaces separate test prep software, language support tools, and MTSS intervention platforms.

🤖 AI Tutoring 3 questions
How does the AI adapt to my student's level?+
Kuliso runs dual-axis adaptation — it adjusts both the content complexity (math, science, ELA difficulty) and the language support (how much native language scaffolding vs. English) independently for each student. After every session it recalibrates based on response quality, not just right/wrong answers. Students placed in MTSS Tier 1/2/3 or Enrichment automatically receive appropriate pacing and scaffolding without teacher configuration.
What languages does the tutor support?+
Kuliso currently supports 20+ languages for tutoring, including Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Arabic, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Somali, Tagalog, and more. New languages are added regularly based on teacher requests — if you need a language that's missing, let us know and we'll prioritize it.
How does native language scaffolding work?+
When a student struggles with a concept, Kuliso switches to their native language to explain it — then gradually brings the explanation back to English as comprehension builds. This mirrors best-practice sheltered instruction. Teachers can set how aggressive the scaffolding is per student, and can also disable native language support for students who are ready for English-only instruction.
What kind of articles are available?+
The Reading Hub offers leveled nonfiction and fiction articles across subjects — science, social studies, current events, and more. Articles are tagged by Lexile band and grade level, and Kuliso automatically surfaces articles that match each student's current reading level. Teachers can also assign specific articles to the whole class or to individual students.
How does the free article limit work?+
Students can access a set number of articles for free each month without any account. Teachers with a paid plan unlock full access for their entire classroom — no per-student limits. Family plan subscribers also get unlimited Reading Hub access for all child profiles on their account.
What games are available?+
The Arcade includes vocabulary games, word-matching challenges, math fluency games, and subject trivia — all tied to actual curriculum standards. Students earn XP that feeds into the global leaderboard. Games are designed to be fast (5–10 minutes) so they work as warm-ups or brain breaks without eating into instruction time.
How does native language bridging work in games?+
Arcade games automatically present vocabulary, prompts, and hints in the student's native language alongside English. For example, a vocabulary matching game will show the English word and its native-language definition, then progressively increase the challenge by making the student recall without the translation. This means even students with very limited English can participate and succeed from day one.
How does the diagnostic quiz work?+
The placement diagnostic assesses each student on content knowledge and language proficiency separately. It takes 10–15 minutes and automatically assigns the student to the appropriate MTSS tier (Tier 1 on-grade, Tier 2 approaching, Tier 3 intensive, or Enrichment above grade level) plus an English language proficiency level (Entering → Commanding). No manual grading required — the system places the student immediately and starts serving differentiated content.
What about ESOL/IEP accommodations?+
Kuliso has 7 built-in accommodation toggles per student — including extended time simulation, simplified instruction language, text-to-speech, reduced-complexity sentence structures, and native language overlay. Teachers can set these once per student and they apply across all features: tutoring, assessments, reading, and games. IEP and ESOL accommodations are documented in each student's activity log for compliance records.
Does Kuliso integrate with our LMS (Canvas, Schoology, Blackboard)?+
Yes. Kuliso supports LTI 1.3 deep linking for Canvas, Schoology, and Blackboard — teachers can embed Kuliso assignments directly into their LMS gradebook. We also support Clever SSO so students log in with their existing school credentials. Roster sync happens automatically on launch. Setup typically takes under 30 minutes and full setup instructions are available here.
What learning standards are covered?+
Kuliso covers CCSS (Math & ELA), NGSS (Science), WIDA English Language Development standards, and most state standards adaptations. Teachers can browse and assign by standard in the Standards Browser, and student activity is automatically tagged to standards for progress tracking and reporting.
Is Kuliso COPPA compliant?+
Yes. Kuliso is fully COPPA-compliant and collects no personally identifiable information from students under 13 without verifiable parental consent. There are zero ads, no student data is sold or used for any purpose outside of delivering the educational service, and all data is encrypted in transit and at rest. A full Data Processing Agreement (DPA) is available for schools at kuliso.org/student-data-privacy.
Do I need IT to set anything up?+
For individual teachers: no. You can sign up and have your classroom running in under 5 minutes — no IT involvement needed. For district-wide Clever SSO or LTI integrations, a brief IT coordination call is usually needed to whitelist the domain and configure the LMS tool. Most districts complete this in one session. We provide guided setup documentation and live support throughout.
Can I use Kuliso at home?+
Absolutely. Kuliso works on any device with a web browser — no app to install. The Family Plan gives you up to 5 child profiles, each with their own grade level, language, and subject settings. It's designed for after-school homework help, summer learning, and bilingual practice at home. Students can pick up exactly where they left off in school if their teacher also uses Kuliso.
What does the Family Plan include?+
The Family Plan ($9.99/mo) includes AI tutoring in all subjects and languages, full Reading Hub access, Arcade games, and a parent dashboard to track each child's progress, session history, and XP earned. Up to 5 child profiles are included with no per-child charge. You can cancel any time. Not sure yet? Try the 3-month Family Pilot for $2.99/mo — refundable if you cancel during the pilot.
