A fraction is a way to show a part of a whole. When you cut a pizza into 4 equal slices and eat 1 slice, you ate 1/4 of the pizza.
The bottom number is called the denominator — it tells you how many equal parts the whole is divided into. The top number is called the numerator — it tells you how many parts you have.
Key vocabulary:
• Fraction: a part of a whole
• Numerator (top number): how many parts you have
• Denominator (bottom number): total equal parts in the whole
Let's try one: A chocolate bar has 8 equal pieces. You eat 3 pieces. Write this as a fraction: 3/8. You ate 3 out of 8 pieces!
Remember: When the numerator equals the denominator (like 4/4), you have the whole thing. When the numerator is smaller, you have a proper fraction — less than 1 whole. Fractions show up everywhere: recipes, measuring, telling time, and sharing things fairly!
