Use the acronym DMSB to remember the four steps:
D — Divide | M — Multiply | S — Subtract | B — Bring down

Step 1 (Divide): How many times does 4 go into 8? → 2
Step 2 (Multiply): 2 × 4 = 8
Step 3 (Subtract): 8 − 8 = 0
Step 4 (Bring down): Bring down the 4 → now work with 04
Step 5: How many times does 4 go into 4? → 1
Answer: 84 ÷ 4 = 21
Key terms:
• Dividend: the number being divided (84)
• Divisor: the number you divide by (4)
• Quotient: the answer (21)
• Remainder: what's left over when it doesn't divide evenly
If there is a remainder, write it as "R" after the quotient. For example: 85 ÷ 4 = 21 R1.
