Word problems hide math inside a story. Your job is to find the hidden math and solve it. Don't panic — there's a strategy!
Use the CUBES method:
C — Circle the numbers
U — Underline the question being asked
B — Box the key math words
E — Evaluate your plan (which operation fits?)
S — Solve and check your answer
Key words by operation:
• Addition: total, sum, in all, altogether, combined, increased by
• Subtraction: difference, less than, left over, remain, how many more
• Multiplication: each, per, times, product, groups of, twice, triple
• Division: share equally, split, per person, how many in each group
Example: "Maya has 4 boxes of crayons. Each box has 12 crayons. How many crayons does she have in all?"
Key word: each → multiplication → 4 × 12 = 48 crayons ✓
Always re-read the question at the end to make sure you answered what was actually asked!
